Can You Get a Spotify Refund? Policy and How to Ask

Updated September 9, 2026 · 5 min read · By SubLess Team

Quick answer

Spotify's rule is that Premium payments are non-refundable: cancel and you keep Premium until the billing date, but the remaining days are not paid back. Spotify does refund billing errors, and the most common one is a duplicate: two Spotify accounts, both on Premium. Refund requests go through support.spotify.com as a chat with an agent. If Apple or Google Play took the payment, ask them, not Spotify.

What Spotify's policy actually says

The Terms of Use say payments are non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise. In practice, that sorts requests into three piles:

  • Refunded almost every time: a second Spotify account you did not know you had, also on Premium, created by logging in with Facebook or Google instead of your email. Show both accounts and Spotify refunds the duplicate charges, sometimes several months of them.
  • Refunded when you have the proof: charged after a confirmed cancellation, charged twice for one period, or a Premium you never signed up for (someone used your card or account). Have the confirmation email or the two receipts ready.
  • Not refunded: months of Premium you forgot about, a trial that converted because you missed the date, or a plan you changed your mind about after using it. Agents can grant a goodwill refund of the last charge, and sometimes do, but it is not a rule you can rely on.

How to ask Spotify for a refund

  1. Find which account was charged. Search your inbox for "Spotify" receipts; the account email or username is at the top of each one. If it is not the account you use every day, you have found your duplicate.
  2. Cancel Premium on that account first at spotify.com/account, so the charge does not repeat next month. How to cancel Spotify.
  3. Open support.spotify.com/contact-spotify-support, choose Subscription → Refunds, and start the chat. The bot asks a few questions and hands you to a person.
  4. Give the facts in three lines: charge date and amount, the last four digits of the card, and one sentence: "duplicate account", "charged after cancelling on [date]", or "did not sign up". For a duplicate, name both accounts.
  5. Save the chat transcript. Approved refunds appear on the card in 5 to 10 business days.

Word for word: "I have two Spotify accounts by mistake: [email A] and [email B]. Both were charged Premium on the 3rd. I use only [email A]. Could you refund the charges on [email B]?" Nothing else needed.

Billed through Apple or Google Play

If your Spotify account page names Apple or Google as the biller, Spotify never saw the money and cannot return it. Spotify support will say so and point you to the store.

Apple

  1. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with the paying Apple Account.
  2. Choose Request a refund, pick a reason and select the Spotify charge.
  3. Submit. Apple decides within about 48 hours.

Google Play

  1. Within 48 hours of the charge, open play.google.com/store/account/orderhistory.
  2. Find the Spotify charge and choose Request a refund.
  3. After 48 hours, Google usually sends you to the developer; in Spotify's case that means the chat above, which will send you back. At that point a polite note to Google Play support explaining the loop tends to work.

Your rights in the EU and UK

Spotify's terms for the EU and UK acknowledge a 14-day right of withdrawal on new subscriptions. The catch is the one every digital service uses: by starting to use Premium, you agree that the service begins immediately and that you lose the right to withdraw. A refund inside those 14 days is realistic only if you have not actually listened. Outside that, a charge after cancellation or a double charge is a billing error, and Spotify fixes those regardless of the 14 days.

If Spotify refuses to correct a clear error, your card issuer can reverse the charge. Use it last: chargebacks take weeks and Spotify may close the account.

When a refund request will not work

  • You listened during the period. Any Premium listening in the month you want refunded ends the request.
  • The trial converted a day ago. Spotify shows the conversion date on the confirmation screen and reminds you by email; agents treat the charge as valid.
  • Family or Duo member. Only the plan manager pays and only the manager can request a refund.
  • Gift cards and prepaid codes. Not refundable once redeemed; the balance stays on the account.

The way not to be here again is a reminder three days before each renewal. Spotify shows the date on the account page under Your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does Spotify refund unused time when I cancel?

No. Cancelling keeps Premium until the end of the paid period and stops the next charge. The remaining days are not refunded.

I was charged for Spotify Premium twice this month. Can I get one back?

Almost certainly yes. Two charges usually mean two accounts, both on Premium. Contact Spotify support with both account emails and the charge dates; they refund the duplicate and help you cancel it.

I cancelled Spotify but was charged again. What now?

Check the account name on the receipt. If it is a different account than the one you cancelled, cancel that one and ask support to refund. If Apple or Google Play appears on your statement, they bill you and you must cancel and request the refund there.

How long does a Spotify refund take?

Once an agent approves it, 5 to 10 business days to reach your card. Apple and Google Play refunds are usually decided within 48 hours.

Can I get a refund for a Spotify gift card?

No. Gift cards and prepaid codes cannot be refunded or exchanged for cash once redeemed. The balance stays on the account and is used for future months.
