How to Get a Refund for an App Store Subscription

Updated September 9, 2026 · 6 min read · By SubLess Team

Quick answer

Every refund for anything bought through the App Store goes through one page: reportaproblem.apple.com. Sign in with the Apple Account that paid, choose Request a refund, pick a reason, select the charge and submit. Apple usually answers within 24 to 48 hours and approved refunds reach the card in a few days. The developer cannot do this for you; Apple took the money and only Apple gives it back.

The request, step by step

  1. Open reportaproblem.apple.com in any browser, on any device, and sign in with the Apple Account that was charged. If your family shares a payment method, sign in as the person whose Apple Account made the purchase, not the card owner.
  2. Choose "Request a refund" from the dropdown at the top.
  3. Pick a reason. The list is short and the choice matters; see the next section.
  4. Select the charge from the list of recent purchases. Charges appear here once they have settled, which can take a day.
  5. Submit and wait. Apple emails a decision, usually within 24 to 48 hours, occasionally up to a week. Approved refunds reach the original payment method in about 3 to 5 business days, or immediately as Apple Account credit if that is how you paid.

You can also start this from an iPhone: open the receipt email from Apple and tap "Report a Problem", or go to Settings, your name, Media & Purchases, View Account, Purchase History, then tap the item.

Choosing the right reason

The reason you pick determines which policy Apple applies, and a mismatched reason is the most common cause of an automatic rejection.

  • "I didn't mean to purchase this item" — the honest choice for a subscription that auto-renewed when you meant to cancel. This is the single most-approved case.
  • "I didn't authorise this purchase" — use only if someone genuinely bought it without your permission, typically a child on a family device. Do not use it for your own forgotten renewal; Apple treats unauthorised-purchase claims seriously and a false one can affect your account.
  • "The item did not work as expected" — for an app that crashes, a feature that does not exist, or content that is not what was advertised. Add a sentence of detail if the form allows it.
  • "Meant to purchase a different item" — wrong tier, wrong app, bought twice.

Keep any free-text explanation to two sentences. Reviewers read hundreds a day; the facts of what happened and when are what count.

What actually gets approved

Apple does not publish its criteria, so this is what we see reported consistently rather than a rule.

  • Approved most of the time: a subscription that renewed within the last few days and has not been used since; a duplicate charge; a purchase made by a child; an app that does not work.
  • Sometimes approved: a renewal you noticed a week or two late, if you have not asked for many refunds before. A polite, specific request helps.
  • Rarely approved: several months of a subscription you forgot about; a repeat request from an account that has had several refunds; anything you have clearly used a lot since the charge.

The pattern behind all of it: Apple is generous once and strict about patterns. Save the request for when you need it.

Cancel first, then ask

A refund does not cancel anything. If you do not want the subscription, cancel it before or right after you request the refund, or it renews again next month and the second charge will not be refunded.

  1. Open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions.
  2. Tap the service, tap Cancel Subscription, confirm.
  3. You keep access until the end of the period you paid for, even if the refund is approved.

Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. That is the single most common misunderstanding in this whole area.

The 14-day right in the EU and UK

In the EU and UK, purchases made in the App Store carry a 14-day right of withdrawal, and Apple honours it. Apple's own refund page in these regions shows a specific option for it. In practice, requesting a refund for a purchase made in the last 14 days through the normal flow is treated under this right and approved far more often than a request from another region.

The exception is the one every digital service uses: for content you have downloaded or streamed, you may have waived the right by starting to use it. In practice Apple applies this loosely for subscriptions and strictly for individual purchases like films.

When Apple says no

  • Ask again once, with more detail. Apple's own guidance allows a second request, and a first automatic decline is sometimes reversed by a human reviewer.
  • Contact Apple Support directly at support.apple.com/contact. A chat with a Billing advisor is a different route from the web form and advisors have discretion the form does not.
  • Go to the developer for a goodwill credit. Apple will not refund, but the service itself may extend your subscription by a month instead. It costs them less than a refund and often works.
  • Chargeback is the last resort. Disputing an Apple charge with your bank can lock your Apple Account until the balance is settled, which takes down your apps, iCloud and purchases with it. Weigh that against the amount.

Not needing this page again

  • Turn off auto-renew the day you subscribe if you only want one month. Settings, your name, Subscriptions, tap the service, Cancel. Access continues to the end of the period.
  • Apple emails you before a renewal when the price changes, but not routinely. Do not rely on it.
  • Note the renewal date somewhere you will see it. A calendar entry the day before is enough, and it is the reason this page exists.

Frequently asked questions

How do I request a refund from the App Store?

Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with the Apple Account that was charged, choose Request a refund, pick a reason, select the charge and submit. You can also start it from Settings, your name, Media & Purchases, View Account, Purchase History.

How long does an Apple refund take?

Apple usually decides within 24 to 48 hours and emails you. Approved refunds reach the original payment method in about 3 to 5 business days, or appear immediately as Apple Account credit if you paid with a balance.

Will Apple refund a subscription that auto-renewed?

Often, if you ask within days and have not used the service since the renewal. Choose "I didn't mean to purchase this item" as the reason. Requests made weeks later, or repeated requests from the same account, are usually declined.

Does a refund cancel my subscription?

No. You must cancel separately in Settings, your name, Subscriptions. If you only get the refund, the subscription renews again next month.

What if Apple refuses my refund?

Submit one more request with more detail, or contact Apple Support by chat, where a Billing advisor can decide differently. You can also ask the app's developer for a goodwill extension. A bank chargeback is a last resort because it can lock your Apple Account.

Can the app developer refund me instead of Apple?

No. Apple processes all App Store payments, so only Apple can issue the refund. A developer can sometimes extend your subscription or credit your account within their own service.
