Cheaper Alternatives to ChatGPT Plus in 2026 (Prices Compared)

Updated September 9, 2026 · 6 min read · By SubLess Team

Quick answer

ChatGPT Plus costs about $20 a month, and so do all of its direct alternatives: Claude Pro, Google's Gemini plan, Perplexity Pro and Microsoft Copilot Pro. Switching does not save money; picking one and dropping the others does. The real alternative for most people is the free tier: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all give away their standard models with limits, and if you hit those limits fewer than a few times a week, you do not need a subscription at all.

Which one fits which kind of work

The table above says they all cost the same. What differs is what each is best at and what else comes in the box.

Claude Pro: long documents and writing

Claude handles very long inputs well, which matters if you paste contracts, reports or whole codebases. Its writing is often preferred for tone and structure, and its coding help is strong. What you give up compared with ChatGPT: image generation and some of the plug-in ecosystem. Best fit: writers, analysts, developers who work in long context.

Gemini via Google One AI Premium: the bundle

Google's plan is the only one that includes something unrelated: 2 TB of Google Drive storage and Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets. If you already pay Google One for storage, upgrading costs a few dollars more than storage alone, and you get the assistant almost free. Best fit: anyone living in Google Workspace who also needs cloud storage.

Perplexity Pro: research with sources

Perplexity is a search engine that answers in prose and cites where it looked. It is the right tool for "what is the current state of X" questions and weak for creative work. Best fit: researchers, journalists, students who need citations. Its Pro plan also lets you switch between several underlying models, including ones from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Copilot Pro: inside Microsoft 365

Copilot Pro puts the assistant into Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, on top of the chat. If most of your day is in Office, that integration is the point; the standalone chat is comparable to the others. Best fit: Microsoft 365 households and small businesses.

Do you need to pay at all?

Every service on this page has a free tier that would have been the paid product two years ago. Free ChatGPT and free Claude include their standard models with message limits; free Gemini is generous with the standard model; free Perplexity does a limited number of Pro searches a day. The honest test is this: count the times in a week you hit a limit or wanted a feature that was locked. Fewer than three, and you are paying for insurance you do not use.

Two more ways to pay less than a subscription:

  • Pay per use through the API. If you use an assistant for occasional heavy tasks, a developer account with OpenAI, Anthropic or Google bills only for what you send. Light users often spend a dollar or two a month. It needs a bit of setup and a client app, but the saving is large.
  • Check for a lower-priced tier in your country. OpenAI, Google and others have introduced cheaper plans in some markets. The pricing page in your region is the only reliable source.

Paying for two AI subscriptions

This is the fastest-growing overlap we see: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro on the same card, sometimes with Perplexity as well. Each has a genuine strength, so the temptation is real. The fix is not to pick the "best" one; it is to pick one to pay for and use the others' free tiers for the specific thing they do better. Claude free for a long document, Perplexity free for a sourced answer, and your paid plan for daily work. If you truly need two, Perplexity Pro's model switcher covers a lot of ground for one price.

Before you switch: three checks

  • Where did you subscribe? ChatGPT Plus bought in the iPhone app is billed by Apple, at a higher price, and is cancelled in iPhone Settings. On the web it is cancelled under Settings → Subscription. How to cancel ChatGPT Plus.
  • Export what you want to keep. ChatGPT can export your chat history from Settings → Data controls. Custom instructions and memories do not transfer anywhere; write down the ones you rely on.
  • Try the free tier of the target for a week first. The differences between these tools are about fit, not quality, and a week of real work tells you more than any comparison, including this one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest alternative to ChatGPT Plus?

The free tiers. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all offer their standard models free with limits. Among paid plans, Google One AI Premium is the best value if you also need cloud storage, because it includes 2 TB of Drive. The paid chat plans themselves are all priced around $20.

Is Claude Pro better than ChatGPT Plus?

For long documents and careful writing, many people prefer Claude; for image generation and the widest range of tools, ChatGPT. They cost the same, so the right answer is the one that fits your daily work, which a week on the free tier will tell you.

Is it worth paying for both ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro?

Rarely. Pay for one and use the other's free tier for the tasks it does better. If you need several models under one plan, Perplexity Pro's model switcher is the cheapest way to get that.

Can I pay for ChatGPT only when I use it?

Yes, through the OpenAI API with a developer account and a client app. You pay per message rather than a flat monthly fee, which is much cheaper for occasional use but needs some setup.

How do I cancel ChatGPT Plus before switching?

On the web: Settings → Subscription → Manage → Cancel plan. If you subscribed in the iPhone app, cancel in iPhone Settings under Subscriptions. Cancel the day before renewal to use the full month you paid for.
